Picture in Picture Pack Usage Instructions:

Built for Mac OS-X
For Mac-OS 10.2 onwards,  and iMovie 2.1.2 and later versions (including iMovie 3):

This pack contains both Effects and Transitions.
All effects use a standard image blend for the 'Effect In' and 'Effect Out' sliders which will blend your rendered clip with the original clip, giving a fade-in and fade-out feature. It will have no other effect on the operation of the effect.

PiP Crossover Transition:

Pushes the first clip into a little picture in the second and then zooms out.
Choose the direction of motion, and select position of mini-pic with the mouse.
The example shown here is taken midway through the zoom-out section of the transition.

This transition creates a crossover between two clips. An equal amount of time is taken from the two clips to create this transition and this time is lost from the overall movie duration.
1. Locate the two clips you wish to apply the transitions to. Make sure they are next to each other in the timeline.
2. Find the "PiP Crossover Transition(ImageIP)" in the transitions panel, and select it.
3. You should see a preview of the transition played in the mini-preview window.
4. Choose the duration of the transitions by setting the speed slider.
5. Choose the start location for the second clip by clicking on a position in the mini-preview window. You will see the mini-clip move to under your pointer and then a preview is played.
6. Choose the direction of the transition by selecting one of the direction arrows (default is to the right). These correspond to each of the four corners of the frame. The first clip will be shrunken off into the chosen corner at the end of the transition.
7. You can press the "Preview" button to see a larger preview in the main window.
8. To "Apply" to render the transition, click on and drag the chosen transition icon down to the movie timeline and drop it at the point you want the transition to be applied (between the two clips).
This will produce a new transition clip which takes it's duration from the clips to which it is being applied. This will be time from the end of the first clip, and from the beginning of the second which is equal to the duration of the transition. For example, a 20 frame transition will take 20 frames from the end of the first clip and 20 frames from the second. The sound from the two clips will be mixed together during the transition.

PiP Background Image Effect:

This effect is applied to the whole clip, replacing each frame with a chosen background image over which the original movie clip is played in a smaller rectangle. The background image will be scaled to fit into the video frame whilst maintaining it's aspect ration. The "PiP Background Image(ImageIP)" and "PiP Background Image Blend(ImageIP)" effects are identical except for how the transparancy is applied. (see below).
1. Select the clip (or number of clips) you wish to apple the effect to.
2. Select the "PiP Background Image(ImageIP)" or  "PiP Background Image Blend(ImageIP)" Effect from the effects panel.
3. Press the "Choose Image" Button in the effects panel. Locate the image file you wish to use and select "Choose".
4. Use the Zoom slider to set the size of your original movie clip over the image. A mini-preview will be shown.
Use the Transparency slider to set the Amount of the background that shows through the movie clip. The "Blend" version  of this effect will blend all parts of the movie clip with the background in varying degrees. For the non-blend version, the transparency slider sets a black-level threshold below which the background will show through. This can be used for removing black borders etc.
Set the Mode slider to left or right to choose the quality of image scaling that is used. "Smooth" or High quality takes longer than "Quick" to render but reduces jagged edges on shrunken movie clips.
5. Select the position of the mini-clip over the background by clicking on a position in the mini-preview. You will see the position of the clip move to under your pointer.
6. You can press the "Preview" button to see a larger preview.
7. Press "Apply" to apply the effect to the clip.
The sound of the clips is not affected.

Suggested Uses:

Border Frame: The Overlay Image effect is ideal for placing a border around your movie clip. Simply produce a border image which has a totally black centre frame, choose it as your image file from the PiP Overlay plugin options and set the transparency level to a very low black level. Move the zoom slider fully to the right and the frame will fill the screen. If the frame is not centered over the movie clip then just click in the centre of the mini-preview until you have the desired location.
Add a Logo: This is the simplest but very effective use of the PiP Overlay Image effect. Choose  image file containing your desired logo from the effect options panel. Click in the mini-preview page to position the logo, and adjust the zoom slider to your desired size. Hit the "Apply" button and that's it. If you wish you can also set the fade in and out slider to bring your logo in and out smoothly at the beginning and end of your clips.
Narrator Box: To achieve this effect you need to produce a movie file which contains the sound and picture of your narrator.  Import this clip into iMovie making a note of the clip number after it's complete. Move the clip onto your movie timeline, highlight it and then activate the "Extract Audio" function from the Advanced menu. Then choose your target clip and bring up the PiP Overlay Movie effect controls. Select the "Choose Movie" button and locate your narattor movie file. By selecting a location in the small preview window with the mouse, and adjusting the zoom slider, position your narattor clip over your movie and hit "Apply". Once this complete, goto the timeline viewer (Click the small clock icon) and move the audio clip you extracted earlier along until it coincides with your newly modified video clip. Ensure both the  movie timeline and the audio track are selected using the toggle buttons on the right and you should be finished.
Annotating detail : You can use the PiP Background Image effect to add a plan, map or diagram to complement an existing clip. e.g. A holiday movie clip where you are travelling could have a map image of the journey or location placed behind it. If you create an animated diagram of your journey, this could be used instead with the PiP Background Movie effect.
